Birds
Do You See What I See?
Build your own igloo like the Black-capped Chickadees!
The Black-caped Chickadees have black and white feathers that are designed to take in heat and act as insulation when they are sleeping. The Black-capped Chickadees make their own igloos in the snow to keep them warm when they are sleeping. Walk like a Ruffed Grouse! Ruffed Grouse have built in snowshoes, by having scales on the sides of their toes, it allows them not to sink in the snow. |
MammalsMOOSE, ELK, BEARS OH MY!
Say Cheese and Smile Like a Beaver!
Beavers have front teeth that never stop growing. Beavers fell trees, eats the leaves, twigs, and bark, and builds dams with the wood. These beaver made dams, that allow for parts of the Boreal forest to flood, making ponds and wetlands. This is a great opportunity, when it is cold enough to go ICE SKATING!! Wish You Could Be As Warm As A Bison? Many large mammals, such as Moose, and Wood Bison, have low surface area-to-volume ratio, which decreases the amount of body heat they loose in the winter. |
Amphibians
Don't Be as Cold Blooded and Experience the Boreal Forest!
Wood Frogs and Chorus Frogs, during hibernation, burrow themselves in the leaf litter, and depend on chemicals to make them freeze-tolerant. |
FishOne Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish!
Fish migrate through different areas of the river or lakes at different times of the year. One of the largest population of fish is Chum Salmon and Chinook Salmon. Both kinds of fish are born in small streams, the mature and grow in the ocean, before migrating back to the rivers to reproduce and die. |
Insects
Shoe Fly Don't Bother Me!
Black Fire Beetles are one of the 32,000 insect species that inhabit Canada's Boreal Forests. The Black Fire Beetles have infrared sensing organs on their bodies, allowing them to track where the heat of forest fires are originating, so they are able to lay their eggs in freshly burned trees. |
